When she got together with John Lennon during the latter part of the era covered by the show — the same era when she became arguably the most hated woman in the world — her art continued to engage with whatever anybody had to say about her.

I thought I knew what a feminist was. I thought I knew about Yoko Ono. I had a lot to learn. Beginning to love Yoko Ono is a dangerous experience, because then you wonder: If Yoko Ono was something more than the woman who broke up the Beatles, then what other lies have I been told?

Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo in to a Buddhist mother and a Christian father — the first of many facts of her wildly antithetical life that sound like the set-up to a bad joke. Yoko blurted out that she would rather be a composer than a pianist anyway, and he told her this was even less likely: Could she name a single female composer?

After the firebombing of Toyko in , Yoko, her mother, and her brother and sister fled to a bunker, where they had to barter for food. Her father was taken to a prisoner-of-war camp; he was assumed dead for almost a year. External order was eventually restored, but for Yoko the postwar years were marked by internal tumult, especially since she was becoming fascinated by Hollywood.

She read Marx and Sartre and Dostoyevsky, then got bored by the rigidness of it all, dropping out after two semesters. In the meantime, her parents had moved to — of all places — Scarsdale, New York; in , she joined them and enrolled at Sarah Lawrence. Play it with the following accompaniment: the woods from 5 a. The two began an affair approximately 18 months later. Lennon divorced his first wife, Cynthia with whom he had a son, Julian, born in , and married Ono on March 20, The couple collaborated on art, film and musical projects, and became famous for their series of "conceptual events" to promote world peace, including the "bed-in" held in an Amsterdam hotel room during their honeymoon in After her marriage to Lennon, Ono struggled with her ex-husband over custody of Kyoko.

She recorded the song "Don't Worry Kyoko" as an effort to reach out to her child. In , her ex-husband disappeared with Kyoko, and Ono did not learn for years what had happened to her daughter. Apparently, Kyoko spent more than a decade living with a religious cult called the Walk with her father. Ono and Lennon became parents in with the arrival of their son, Sean.

Lennon quit the music business to raise Sean, and when the famed musician returned to the spotlight in , he was shot by a deranged fan, Mark David Chapman, only a few feet from Ono. Since Lennon's death, Ono has continued her career, recording albums, performing concert tours and composing off-Broadway musicals.

She has exhibited her art internationally, and the first U. Involved in an array of social endeavors, she co-founded Artists Against Fracking with son Sean in to lobby against drilling for natural gas in New York State. Ono has also continued to honor Lennon's memory with a number of different projects. On October 9, , she inaugurated the LennonOno Grant for Peace award to commemorate what would have been Lennon's 62nd birthday.

This outdoor artwork, created by Ono, represented her and Lennon's commitment to world peace. Ono made music history in , becoming the oldest artist to have a number-one hit on the dance charts. She was 78 years old when "Move on Fast" made it to the top spot.

Ono has also enjoyed renewed interest in her artwork with a special exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art in This show featured more than works by Ono from to She performed musical pieces and was a reluctant part of the Fluxus art group, she was a seminal figure at its inception but didn't want to remain associated with it as she valued her independence as an artist. She published her legendary book of performance poetry called Grapefruit and began making films.

After performing her now-famous Cut Piece , she was invited to hold an exhibition at the Indica Gallery in London. As she was preparing the exhibit, John Lennon came in to view the exhibit. He admired her artworks and was especially taken with YES , a small affirmative painting at the top of a ladder, which he appreciated for its positivity.

He also enjoyed Hammer A Nail and although the exhibition hadn't yet opened asked if he could hammer in a nail, when Ono said no the gallery owner took her aside and explained that Lennon was a millionaire and might buy the piece. Ono hadn't heard of the Beatles. She agreed that John could hammer in a nail for five shillings. Lennon replied that in exchange for an imaginary five shillings he'd hammer in an imaginary nail. Drawn together by their love of words and music, they began to collaborate on performance and film.

By Ono had divorced Cox and married Lennon. Cox won custody of Kyoko and bitterly resisted Ono's visitation rights.

In he fled with Kyoko to Los Angeles and joined a cult. Despite an official investigation, Ono and Lennon were unable to trace the whereabouts of him or the child. They finally resurfaced in By then Kyoko was 22, and she and Ono have since remained somewhat estranged. An open letter from Ono to her daughter, the year that she was found, gives us some insight into this tumultuous period in her life, as well as the strength of her character: "Dear Kyoko, All these years there has not been one day I have not missed you.

You are always in my heart. However, I will not make any attempt to find you now as I wish to respect your privacy. I wish you all the best in the world.

This ongoing personal drama and her relationship with one of the most famous people in the world put a strain on Ono's career in the s and 80s. Her avant-garde friends thought she was getting too mainstream. Ono's personal practice waned as her work ethic needed focus and with John at her side her attention became split.

The high-profile relationship was hard for Ono as she and John were not liked very much by the public, and many thought Ono was taking Lennon away from his famous band.

Girls were also jealous of her. Ono felt she needed space from it and she and Lennon took some time apart physically, but remained close talking every day. A year later she and Lennon got back together and she became pregnant. At the age of 42, Ono was afraid of miscarrying again, since she had lost several pregnancies already. Therefore, she spent most of that time in bed.
