David Turner , professor of New Testament, reflects on why what we celebrate on this day is so central to the gospel. The resurrection of Jesus is at the heart of the Christian message. How unfortunate that church services may stress the empty tomb only on Easter Sunday, or even just through the Eastertide season.

The resurrection culminates the passion narrative in all four Gospels because it is at the center of redemption itself. Without it, one can only pity Jesus as a dead martyr whose lofty ideals were sadly misunderstood. Paul bluntly stated that apart from the resurrection our faith and message are in vain 1 Corinthians To be sure, the apostolic proclamation of the gospel centered on the cross Galatians ; 1 Corinthians ; 1 Peter ; Hebrews , 14; ; Revelations , 9.

But the meaning of the cross is at best unclear without the resurrection. What can be better news than that? According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you… 1 Peter Christ is described as the first fruits of the resurrection from the dead, meaning that his resurrection is a precursor to the resurrection that all believers 1 Corinthians For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Christians will enjoy the resurrected life just like Christ did, with glorified bodies raised in power 1 Corinthians We may suffer in this life with many pains and illnesses, but in the life to come, we will not suffer, but enjoy the perfect bodies we have always longed for. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.

All of the world will one day be judged for the things they have done and be held accountable before God. Believers will be held accountable for the things they have done, and will be rewarded by God in heaven based on their actions as believers. The sign God gave to confirm this fact was the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. If you do not believe in Jesus Christ, this judgment should be a cause for tremendous fear. You will face the wrath of God and suffer an eternity in hell because of the sins you have committed.

But this judgment does not have to be a thing to dread. The way to obtain forgiveness and eternal life is by believing in Jesus and turning from your sin.

Believing in Jesus is what makes all of the benefits of the resurrection yours. Faith is what unites us to Christ and allows us to be saved from our sin.

I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? John Those who have died are with God. Christians believe that when they are baptised they share in the resurrection of Jesus and so are brought into a new relationship with God.

They show this in their actions by being kind and loving. A painting of the resurrection of Christ by J. Snellinckx - Everything he said and did was true. They also believe that the resurrection means Jesus is still with us and is guiding us every day.
