If this is the first time that the female has mated, the fertilized egg does not stay there long. In the case of the red kangaroo it is only thirty three days before the neonate emerges. Usually only one is born at a time. It is a blind, hairless an only a few centimetres long; its hind legs are mere buds, but its forelegs are better developed and with these it hauls its way through the thick fur on its mother's abdomen.
The neonate's journey to the pouch takes about three minutes. Copulation is rarely repeated in this species. Once copulation has occurred the male is no longer responsible for the care of the joey. The fertilized egg will then undergo a usual gestation period of approximately 33 days. Only one young is carried at a time. When the kangaroo gives birth to the young, it is about the size of a lima bean. It is also hairless and is unable to see or hear.
It then follows a trail of saliva left by the female that leads to the pouch. The joey climbs into the pouch where it remains for about one year. After giving birth to their joey, females are ready to mate again. This is why kangaroos are practically pregnant as long as they are fertile.
I found this amazing website that shows pictures of the development of joeys. Joeys undergo incredible development. Did you know that kangaroos and wallaroos have many things in common?
If you want to read more about the difference between a kangaroo, a wallaroo and a wallaby read my article on that topic. To become a grown-up kangaroo, a joey only drinks milk for the first few months in the pouch.
Inside the pouch, a joey is protected from threats such as dingoes and eagles. It will take about six months until it starts to look out of its mother's pouch.
Joeys practice hopping, jumping, and learn what they can eat. They finally leave the pouch for good at about 10 months, but they continue to suckle until they are about 18 months old. Female eastern grey kangaroos sexually mature between 17 and 28 months, males mature at around 25 months.
Female western grey kangaroos sexually mature at 16 months, males mature at 31 months. Female red kangaroos sexually mature between 15 to 20 months, males mature at 2 to 3 years old.
Yes, joeys poop and pee in the pouch. It can get smelly sometimes and therefore the mother cleans out the pouch by licking it out from time to time. Unlike female kangaroos, male kangaroos do not have a pouch. They cannot produce milk and they, therefore, do not need a pouch.
Kangaroos mainly die due to a lack of nutrition, getting killed by other animals such as dingoes, foxes, eagles, cats, human activity, and becoming victims of diseases. Mortality in kangaroos is furthermore affected by bushfires. Macropod reproduction kangaroo and wallaby is truly fascinating. Kangaroo females get pregnant in the regular way. So the whole pregnancy is only about 28 days long!
